The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) met on Thursday to assess the citys COVID situation and to decide whether to extend the Delhi Epidemic Act past September 30. According to officials, 11 Covid Care Centers (CCC) have been closed because of the recent drop in Covid cases in Delhi, while two centers are still open and reported a minimal number of patients.

The meeting presided over by Lt Governor VK Saxena and included Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal decided to scale down medical staff and infrastructure deployed for the COVID management in a calibrated manner following an action plan to be prepared by the Health Department.

Currently, two CCCs are operational: one at the Ambedkar Nagar Hospital, which has 50 beds and reported 4-5 admissions over the last three months, and another at the Balak Ram Hospital, which has 25 beds and had no admissions over that time.

The Delhi government and the Central government closed and demolished seven CCCs, and one CCC, respectively. According to the administration, three additional facilities totaling 4,000 beds were closed but not yet demolished.

The government hospitals in Delhi were permitted to hire up to 25% more physicians, 40% more nurses, and paramedics than what had been authorized during the early pandemic waves and are allowed to hire medical personnel on a contract basis to fill vacant positions solely in COVID institutions till March 2023.

On Thursday, Delhi reported 431 active cases and 77 new Covid cases, with a positive rate of 0.74 percent. 42 of the 9,266 beds that were earmarked for Covid patients in different municipal hospitals are currently filled. (ETHealthWorld, September 24, 2022)
